Odisha’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) collection in December jumped to Rs 2,860.20 crore, a 20% growth from Rs 2,383.29 crore in December 2019, which was the highest growth among major states of India.

The state collected Rs 765.26 crore of SGST and Rs 965.75 crore of IGST during the last month of 2020. The growth in SGST and IGST were 5.35% and 38.75% respectively.

The growth shows the recovery in the state’s economy as the negative impact from Covid-19 abates. The GST collection is also expected to improve in the coming months as the economic activity increases and the government and private sector spends more. However, the collection from mines continues to be sluggish as many of them remain non-operational.

The GST commissionerate is focusing on expanding the revenue collection by adding more companies and individuals under the GST. During December, 35,461 new taxpayers has been registered under the GST.
